Raymond Robertson, the Sports Minister, who is attending the Olympic Games in Atlanta, has confirmed that a Scottish Institute of Sport will dovetail with the British Academy of Sport, whose development was announced last week by the Prime Minister.

Around Pounds 100 million of National Lottery money is to be pumped into the initiative but no sites have yet been identified. However, the Scottish venture is likely to be linked to an existing centre of excellence. Tenders for the British site have to be submitted by October 31 with the successful bidder revealed early next year.

John Lindsay, a spokesman for the Scottish Sports Council, said: "We are already developing our Scottish Institute of Sports Medicine and Sports Science and our athletes' support programme has given out Pounds 200,000 in grants. "
