Spotlight on ... Human rights

7th December 2012 at 00:00

With Christmas almost upon us and Human Rights Day (10 December) approaching, encourage pupils to focus on humanitarian issues.

What are human rights?

Introduce the topic with this "marketplace" activity, in which pupils play human rights "owners" and "buyers". Owners try to persuade buyers to purchase different rights, while buyers must decide which are the most important.

Focus on a human rights case study and discover the plight of people who are forced to leave their homeland.

Human Rights Day

Explore the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in this easily adaptable assembly showing what can happen when basic human rights are denied.
