Staying on

Scottish Office figures for 1996 show that 67 per cent of pupils are now staying on into a fifth year and 42 per cent to sixth year, similar percentages to the previous year. Nearly 850,000 pupils attended state-sector schools, a slight rise, but the number of teachers fell by 600 to 52,400.
