Take charge

- The Scottish Parliament is inviting young people aged 16-25 to take over for the day at this year's Get the Picture! event on 25 August, part of its Festival of Politics. Groups wishing to attend should complete the online booking form or email Frances Paulo at

Star appeal

- The theme of this year's National Poetry Day - Thursday, 4 October - is stars. The Scottish Poetry Library has prepared a range of teaching resources exploring star-themed poems. There will be stars on its poem postcards, dazzlingly starry posters to download and shining ideas for teaching and activities.

Slow it down

- Cycling charity Sustrans has launched a schools competition, Be a Two- Zero Hero, asking children aged 7-11 to explain how slower speed limits outside their homes and schools might change their lives. Entrants should design a postcard with their thoughts - it could be a drawing, diagram, poem, song, rap, photograph or slogan, or anything else creative.

Stroke of genius

- The Scottish Qualifications Authority's extensive art collection of work produced by students studying art and design courses is now available to borrow via its new service Art Online. Pieces are available to schools, colleges and public sector organisations to borrow for up to six months. For more details, see bit.lyNMbL6N

Bear essentials

- A group of children in South Lanarkshire has been learning about the dangers of speeding with help from three life-sized teddy bears. Speeding Ted is part of the Exploring Speed through Active Learning road safety resources developed by Road Safety West of Scotland, Lynda Keith Education and Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership. Resource packs will be available to all South Lanarkshire primaries from next term.
