Wise words

ENGLISH

- The subject of this year's James Hemming Essay Prize is a quotation inspired by philosopher Bertrand Russell: "A good world needs knowledge, kindliness and courage. It does not need a regretful hankering after the past or a fettering of the free intelligence by the words uttered long ago by ignorant men."

Reading patron

LITERACY

- Children's author Nicola Morgan has become Scotland's first patron of reading - at Larbert High, near Falkirk. The scheme is the idea of Tim Redgrave, a head in Wales, and children's author Helen Pielichaty. Ms Morgan blogged, saying she was available, and that morning was contacted by the school's librarian, Kimberley Bryce.
