The publication of Palestinian school results this week led to celebratory gunfire in the West Bank and the collapse of the region's mobile phone network as it became overloaded with calls from proud relatives. The release of scores from the tawjihi, the school-leavers exam, has become an important annual event. The names and scores of those who passed are published in newspaper supplements, posted on the internet and read aloud on local radios.
