Go learn. Feed your interest in sustainable living on an Experience Week at the Findhorn Foundation on the edge of the Moray Firth in Scotland (01309 690 311, www.findhorn.org). This centre for alternative living began as a vegetable patch tended by three visionaries in 1962 and is now, among many other things, an accredited United Nations training centre promoting sustainability. Guests take part in the work of the community, gardening biodynamically, cooking, and joining in meditation, sacred dance, a nature outing and other activities. The cost - from pound;345 to pound;485 for the week - is determined on a sliding scale according to income and includes seven nights' full board and accommodation at the Park or Cluny Hill College in Forres nearby. It is sometimes possible to get single accommodation.

Go late

Word is that scorching July will be followed by a sultry August. Fairhaven Holiday Cottages still has a few properties available in Kent. One is Iluka, which faces Herne Bay across a shinglesand beach. Sleeping two to three, the cottage has won a Kent Tourism Award and is available in the weeks beginning August 12 and 19 for pound;420 a week. It's not too late to make for Cornwall, either. The Salt House, a refurbished traditional stone cottage in Mevagissey, has views over the harbour wall and out to sea. Cornish Traditional Cottages is offering a 20 per cent discount for the week beginning August 25, so four can enjoy a week self-catering for Pounds 413 instead of pound;516.
