Tables turn-up

5th November 2004 at 00:00
What indeed would you do without the Association of Teachers and Lecturers? (Diary, TES, October 22). Our successful campaign to rename "school performance tables" as "school attainment and achievement tables" addresses a serious issue.

The tables now show value added by schools, i.e. not only raw scores but also pupil progress. The new title emphasises this distinction and is one small success in ATL's campaign to abolish league tables altogether. What's in a name?In this case quite a lot.
