Teachers, volcanoes and transport chaos

Teachers and pupils stranded, worries about getting paid, supply teachers cash in and all the latest volcanic resources to help with your lesson planning.

The TES Connect forums have been red hot with volcanic discussions over the past few days. We've got teachers stranded overseas worried that they won't get paid and we've got heads wondering whether or not they should pay these teachers.

Of course this is the internet so we've also got our fair share of crackpot conspiracy theories: One contributor thinks the Government is clearing our skies so the aliens can land.

We also asked Ed Balls for his take on the eruption and its effect on schools in our recent webchat. Commented on the extent of the disruption, Balls said: "Many schools around the country are obviously affected with Heads, teachers and pupils unable to get back. But the feedback is that schools are coping well - we are keeping things under close review - my concern would be that some young people with exams coming up may miss valuable revision time if their learning is disrupted for more than a few days so clearly getting teachers and pupils back home as soon as possible is a real priority."

On the issue of paying stranded staff Balls told us: "This is a matter for individual schools or local authorities to decide as the employer rather than central government - it will depend on particular local arrangements - but my view would be that if a teacher is unable to get back from abroad it would be very unfair for them to lose pay as a result."

School policies - will you get paid if you miss school?
