American high school sports mascots cover the sublime to the ridiculous, with some of the strangest including the Kenmare High Honkers, the Avon Old Farms High Winged Beavers and the Minden High Whippets.

But imagine an asparagus stalk jumping around on the school campus trying to bring luck to the sports team. The College of William Mary in Virginia has no such qualms about how this might look after "asparagus served with cheese" was submitted as a suggestion for the university's mascot because it was felt it represented the college's colours.

The college said this week that more than 400 nominations for different mascots have been submitted, and more than 1,000 people are following the search on Facebook.
