Far-out ideas usually raise few eyebrows in Marin county, north of San Francisco, which remains a magnet for the flower power generation. However, parents of pupils at Terra Linda high in San Rafael have forced the school to reject a grant it was due to receive from the cult filmmaker David Lynch (pictured). The pound;100,000 donation would have allowed staff and pupils to study transcendental meditation techniques developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Beatles former spiritual guru.

But parents complained that the idea seemed cult-like.
