TES Schools Awards 2009 - Editor's introduction

12th June 2009 at 01:00

Anyone who doubts that English education is alive with creativity, ambition and excitement should read this booklet. It lists the 15 winners of the first TES Schools Awards for England and Wales and describes some of their achievements. The awards celebrate success in teaching, leadership, community involvement and new building.

We launched them last December and have been delighted by the response. Our panel of distinguished judges has been impressed by the range and quality of the hundreds of entries. They wanted to recognise outstanding innovation, so they looked beyond the traditional methods of measuring success. The standard of entries was so high that they faced an extremely difficult task in deciding between those on the shortlist. We are very grateful to all our judges for giving up their time and for showing such energy and enthusiasm in judging the awards.

We are very happy to support our sponsored charity, Jeans for Genes, which organises the day when pupils and staff pay Pounds 1 to wear jeans to school in aid of children with genetic disorders and investment in genetic research.
