The Times Educational Supplement Scotland took the top award of Scottish Magazine of the Year in this year's publishing industry Oscars

At a dinner in Glasgow last week, organised by the Professional Publishers Association Scotland, TESS also won three of the other major categories - Business and Professional Magazine, Publishing Star, and Sales Performance.

The panel of nine judges chose TESS out of a total of 132 entries. They said they were "inspired" by the magazine, which they described as "an extremely high-quality publication with impressive editorial and presentation: in addition to being informative, the magazine adds genuine value to the profession it serves".

The top award is determined by the judges from the winners of all the 19 categories involved. The judges took account of editorial and professional innovation, readership gains, production values, market forces and commercial achievement. The magazine will now be automatically entered for the national PPA awards next year.

The awards also saw Neil Munro, TESS managing editor, win a new Publishing Star category, which is for an individual who has shown innovation and enterprise in driving their company's success. From a short-list of seven, the judges concluded that he had demonstrated "a compelling story of an innovative response and commitment to the publication during challenging times."

The accolade of Sales Performance of the Year went to Linzi Carr of the TESS advertising sales team for achieving sales growth which was "extremely impressive in this climate." The judges added that: "The winner's energy, innovation and engagement with clients have clearly breathed new life into this sector."

Further PPA honours were notched up by David Patterson who was commended for sales performance, and by Jean McLeish, similarly recognised in the feature writer category.

Louise Rogers, chief executive officer of TSL Education, parent company of TESS, said: "The team has gone from strength to strength since relaunching the publication in 2011 and I am delighted to see them recognised and rewarded for their hard work.

"We are all extremely proud of both the quality of our Scottish products and our TESS team."
