The TESS wins top honour
The Times Educational Supplement Scotland has scooped one of the premier awards in publishing.
It was named Business and Professional Magazine of the Year by an expert panel of judges at the Periodical Publishers' Association Scotland annual awards, a gala occasion held in Glasgow's Radisson Hotel last Thursday.
The TESS beat off strong competition from six other titles short-listed in that category, which was sponsored by PPA Scotland. It is awarded to a publication which, in the opinion of the judges, operates to a high standard in a specialised field, showing relevance, quality editorial and presentation, and strong circulation and advertising performance.
The 12-person judging panel consisted of leading figures in the industry, chaired by Helen Alexander, a former chief executive of the Economist Group. They chose the winners in 17 categories from 143 entries submitted by 35 companies, in fields as diverse as business, design, sport and retail.
This was whittled down to a short list of 86. The TESS also made the final for Sales Initiative of the Year, recognising particular achievement in advertising.
Louise Rogers, managing director of TSL Education, parent company of The TESS, said: "There has been a huge amount of thought and work involved in the relaunch of the publication as a Scottish-only title, and it's great to see all this being acknowledged in such a high- profile awards win."
Neil Munro, editor of The TESS, commented: "This is obviously a very proud moment for our entire team - in editorial, advertising, design, production, marketing, circulation and distribution. Everyone has played his or her part.
"It has been an exhilarating two years since, under new ownership, we moved from being an edition of The TES in England to a fully Scottish, all-colour journal. Having had a wholly positive response to that long-overdue step from the professional market we serve, it is now doubly satisfying to see our efforts recognised by fellow professionals."
This year's win tops a strong performance at last year's PPA Scotland awards when The TESS was "highly commended" in the Business and Professional Magazine category.
