Only 2 per cent of infant pupils - 30,000 children - are in classes that have more than 30 pupils, government figures show.

Ministers have pledged to keep ky stage 1 class sizes below 30. Last year, 11 per cent of five to seven-year-olds were in classes of 30 plus, and the figure was 22 per cent in 1998.
