Last week, the Diary mentioned shadow education secretary Tim Collins's passion for the TV show Countdown. But it seems Richard Whiteley's quiz is not his only light entertainment enthusiasm: he is also a serious Doctor Who nut.

He told the Diary he could hardly wait to see Christopher Ecclestone as the new Doctor but said he was seriously disappointed about the lack of Daleks in the new series. He even knew precisely when and where the filming would begin. Clearly, a man of many parts.
