Training that's not up to the job

Your article on the difficulties faced by on-the- job teacher education providers ("Blow to graduate trainers", TES, January 27) was revealing, particularly as huge cuts are being made to the number of student teachers that higher education institutions are allowed to recruit.

All the evidence - including that from Ofsted and surveys of newly qualified teachers - demonstrates the high quality of HE-based teacher training.

Why, then, do alternative routes continue to receive preferential treatment in terms of both funding and the allocation of student number places? Given the Training and Development Agency's obligation to reward and protect good provision, such alternative routes should in fact be the first port of call when cuts have to be made.
