Union chief quits

DENMARK: Jorn Ostergaard, chair of Danmarks Laererforening (the Danish teachers' union), has resigned after a 67 per cent majority vote against a new salaries and conditions agreement with local councils, the employers. Both Mr Ostergaard and the union's congress had recommended agreement. The teachers' working hours agreement took full effect at the start of the school year, and introduced a budgeting system for hours for teaching, preparation and other activities. The issue has been referred to the conciliation and arbitration service, but strikes are predicted.
