Walk a mile for the Welsh language

Wales's most famous wannabe teacher is enjoying life as a celebrity, so teaching may have to wait.

Big Brother runner-up Glyn Wise pledged to join the profession to promote the Welsh language after emerging from the house as a champion of his mother tongue.

He was initially banned from speaking Welsh with fellow contestant Imogen Thomas, from Llanelli. But by the end of this summer's show, their conversations were being subtitled.

The 18-year-old from Blaenau Ffestiniog said this week: "I'm loving doing all the media stuff.

"I like being on television, on radio and modelling. So I may wait until I'm 30 before teaching."

He may also not take up his deferred place at the University of Wales Bangor next year.

The ex-sixth-former of Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy, Llanrwst, is mixing night-club appearances with working for the Welsh Language Board to encourage more Welsh people to speak the language. This week he was on a tour of north Wales, signing autographs for children from Ysgol Borth-Y-Gest, Porthmadog, at the start of a sponsored walk.

Glyn grew up in a bilingual household with an English father and Welsh mother.

"My dad was away during the week so we were a Welsh-speaking household on weekdays and English at the weekends," he said.

"I didn't go into the Big Brother house with the intention of campaigning for Welsh, it's just in me," he added.
