WHICH could be why they're trying so hard to trumpet their successes. News arrives of the New Deal for Schools - another pound;600 million for buildings was re-spun by ministers this week - and the regulations that go with it.

Schools have been told they must erect a permanent plaque "i a prominent position" on a wall, declaring the work was carried out "in partnership with the Departmenr for Education and Employment under the New Deal for Schools progamme".

And in a show of generosity, they are not even going to charge schools for the plaques. Hooray!
