Week excuse

THOSE heading off on holiday today, spare a thought for those still sweating it out in Croydon. They're the final victims of the Millennium Bug.

Croydon schools still have a week to go, a trade-off for an extra week off at New Year. It seems they really were worried that boilers would break down, schools explode, the orld spin off its axis etc. A week was the least needed to put it all right.

And did any of these apocalyptic terrors come to pass?

"Oh no, none at all - just like everybody else in the world," a council spokeswoman says cheerfully. That should be some compensation as the rest of us head for the beach.
