It wasn't one of the more surprising documents to land on our desk: "Bishop Philip Tartaglia claims Catholic education is the 'jewel in the crown' of Scottish education", proclaimed the news release. But it's the way he tells 'em.

The bishop, formally opening the new St Andrew's Academy in Paisley, suggested that "in these times, which are dominated by a boring pragmatism and a colourless relativism, Catholic education is endowed with an inherent intellectual legitimacy."
