`White coats' at war

The "battle of the white coats" intensified this week as medical students increased their protests at the lack of employment and training opportunities for recent graduates.

Angele Amador, the Spanish health minister, said that future places for studying medicine should be reduced by almost a third. A European directive requiring all doctors wishing to practise in public health to have completed postgraduate training is due for implementation by next month.
