Telephone operators, Avon ladies, farm workers and secretaries are some of the jobs featured in an exhibition opening at the Annan Museum on May 16, which celebrates the lives of working women from the AnnandaleEskdale area. The Working Lassie, which runs until June 23, is based on 60 hours of taped interviews with women who worked in a variety of jobs in the 1930s to 1980s. One woman recalls her days delivering telegrams, by bicycle, to eloping couples at Gretna Green.
"At one time, there was a huge number of jobs that women could not do. They still had a lot of fun at work and this exhibition reflects that," says Anne Ramsbottom, the exhibition curator.
The show includes photographs, film and objects. A schools' project, based on The Working Lassie, will start in August. T 01461 201384.
