Writing horror stories

8th October 2004 at 01:00
Would you like your students to spend this Sunday (October 10) writing horror stories with Alan Gibbons (pictured)? Give them the bus fare to Huddersfield, where the central library has managed to pin Gibbons down in a week when most authors are dashing between literary festivals. His workshop is one option at the library's Teenage Kicks event from 11am-3.30pm: others include a football reading game, printmaking, mixing music, and drama. Last-minute bookings on 01484 226300 (today) or 07906 765851 (weekend).

Look out for the Reading Africa list of 30 books selected by the Southern Africa Book Development Trust to promote in the UK with help from Arts Council England, the British Council and Book Aid. A programme of events has been organised for Black History Month, starting on October 16 at Ilkley Literature Festival (Leila Aboulela and Buchi Emecheta at 1pm, tel 01943 816714); Brixton library in south London on October 29 (Jack Mapanje and Veronique Tadjo at 7.30pm, tel 020 7926 0750); Basildon library in Essex on November 3 (Veronique Tadjo and Wangui Wa Goro at 7.30pm, tel 01628 288533); and Birmingham Library Theatre on the same day (Beverley Naidoo, Diran Adebayo and Jack Mapanje at 6.30pm, tel 0121 236 5622).
