Young guns

7th February 1997 at 00:00
With regard to the picture of a young member of Thornlands Shooting Centre (TES, January 24) and the criticism of an under-16s shooting day, fellow teachers might be interested in a survey done in the United States on delinquency and children with legally-held handguns.

The survey finds that children who own legally-held handguns commit less street crime, less armed crime and even take fewer drugs than children who own no gun at all. Surely we should all be campaigning for a wider gun ownership among children?
