Young Poet;Poem;Ploughing in Winter by Daniel Tebble

26th June 1998 at 01:00
This poem has a single image - that of the land turning into the sea and it conveys it with economy in a way that leaves a lasting impression on the reader's mind. And it's a poem neither the writer nor the reader could expect to grow out of. The teacher who sent the work in did not mention the poems Daniel Tebble has been reading in order to develop this clean and lucid style, but it reads like some of my favourite bits of Paul Muldoon or Theodore Roethke, or translations from Chinese (though what either of these three would think of being grouped together in this way I can't imagine!).

PLOUGHING IN WINTER

BY DANIEL TEBBLE

Silver, shining,

Sharp blades slicing

Curling the soil

Into a waving sea.

Rolling to the horizon

To meet the winter sky.
