Appropriately, the centre has been created in the town's old post office building, of which there is an early 20th-century postcard showing girls in white pinafores and boys in short trousers standing outside.
Carroll Foggo, curator, said: "Among the highlights in the show are a letter dating from 1711, and a pair of Penny Black stamps, both lent by local people. We also have some examples of junk mail on display which is now becoming collectable. Schools don't have to book to take part in the activities because they are being offered on a 'drop in' basis."
