5-11 September 2015

Saturday

It’s all in the detail

TES columnist and behaviour tsar Tom Bennett invited teachers to share ideas on improving classroom practice at this year’s ResearchED national conference. Catch up on the day’s events with the #rED15 hashtag.

Sunday

Road worthy

After Le Tour, it was the UK’s turn to host some of the world’s best road cyclists – and we don’t mean virtuous staff members biking to work. Today was the first stage of the Tour of Britain, all gruelling 178km of it.

Monday

Going Underground

It was 75 years since the start of the Blitz – a 267-day period of German bombing of British cities. Among the many thousands who sheltered in London’s Underground stations were teachers and their classes.

Tuesday

Beam me up

A celestial date for split infinitives, US network NBC decided to boldly go with a new sci-fi series, Star Trek, on this day in 1966. Trekkie kids have been attempting playground Vulcan death grips ever since.

Wednesday

Raise a glass

Agonising over what to wear for this year’s school photo? Blame English astrologer, chemist and polymath John Herschel, who invented the first glass-plate photograph on this day in 1839.

Thursday

Big Bang theory

Hailed as the biggest scientific experiment in history, in search of the elusive Higgs boson, the Large Hadron Collider – a 27km underground ring of magnets – went live for the first time seven years ago.

Friday

Round ’em up

If you’re thinking of developing a whistle system to herd your children into assembly, head to Meikleholm near Moffat, Scotland, because today is the second day of the three-day International Sheep Dog Trials.

12-18 September 2015

Saturday

Gang of four

Scotland may have chosen its new Labour leader but England has yet to declare. Andy Burnham, Yvette Cooper, Jeremy Corbyn and Liz Kendall are all in the running and the winner is set to be announced today.

Sunday

Marvellous medicine

Not planning to celebrate Roald Dahl Day, you frothbuggling quogwinkle?! Dust off your copy of The BFG, or any of the author’s 17 great children’s stories, and read them to your soon-to-be captivated class.

Monday

Honeyed words

Happy Rosh Hashanah – it’s the first day of the Jewish New Year. On this day, a ram’s horn is sounded in synagogues, while apples dipped in honey are eaten in the hope of heralding a sweet new year.

Tuesday

A voice for everyone

It’s the United Nations’ International Day of Democracy, first observed in 2008 to promote voting rights. Use these resources with your class to spread the word about being heard: bit.ly/DemoResources

Wednesday

True grito

School’s out in Mexico as teachers mark Independence Day, or the Grito de Dolores. The celebration centres on Mexico City’s main square, and festivities are also held around the country.

Thursday

Frosting reception

Happy National Cupcake Week! Today is day four, and you can offset any sense of guilt you feel at hoovering up yet another angel cake by raising money for CLIC Sargent, the official charity for the event.

Friday

On a wing and a prayer

Rugby fans from 20 nations will be hoping that their team lifts the William Webb Ellis trophy as the eighth Rugby World Cup kicks off. Expect the PE department to be beyond excited.
