SNOW. The snow on the roads Crackles with laughter When cars go by They wiggle and wave By Hannah Swift, 7, who receives Matthew Sweeney’s The Flying Spring Onion.

Submitted by Pauline Blakeley of Helmsley County Primary School, York, who receives the Poetry Society’s teachers’ newsletter, a quarterly bulletin which includes features on innovative approaches to poetry in the classroom as well as news on the latest resources, events and issues. For Poetry Society events, ring 071 240 4810.

It’s certainly a fresh way to look at snow, to give it and the wiggling cars life. The poem has such a reassuring sense of fun that you feel the world only comes truly alive when there’s snow.
