We are reminded that Ann Hill, departed chief executive of the Scottish School Board Association, once expressed a desire to “sink back into obscurity” after the furore over national testing in the early 1990s died down.

This was the campaign she believes she launched from tiny Mouswald primary in rural Dumfriesshire, where she chaired the board.

Hill’s tempestuous times with the SSBA and her acrimonious departure, well chronicled in these columns, may lead her at last to the obscurity she sought - but not perhaps in the way she would have sought it.

In her idler moments, she may perhaps find reassurance from the SSBA’s website which informs us that “the association runs a very busy problem-solving service which has proved very successful and very useful”.

So where was it when it was needed most - by its own chief executive and executive board?
