ENGLISH teachers are a funny lot. In the interests of research, Bethan Marshall, a lecturer at King’s College, London, sent English teachers her rough guide to the types she had discerned and asked for their comments. They all replied true to form.

The technicians covred their copy in red pen; the dissenters only filled in what they considered relevant and added comments; and the philosophers wrote little poems in the margins.

Her book, the first unofficial guide to English teachers, is about to be published this week.
