Theresa May is new education shadow; In brief

Theresa May, a former banker and local government leader, replaces David Willetts as Conservative front-bencher for education and employment in the Shadow Cabinet re-shuffle. Mrs May, 42, who cut her political teeth as chair of education in the London borough of Merton, is seen as a Hague loyalist. The Maidenhead MP has been in the Commons for only two years and, while number two in the education team, had been tipped for promotion. She was educated at a comprehensive and St Hugh's College, Oxford, and became an MP after a career in the City. Mr Willetts takes over the social security brief.
