THEY SAID...

Care home pupils to be given places in top boarding schools (The Daily Telegraph) we say...

WE SAY...

The plan is actually aimed at preventing children from going into care homes in the first place, as Beverley Hughes, children’s minister, made clear.

“There is evidence to show that attending a boarding school may be an appropriate way to help some of these children and prevent family breakdown or a move into the care system,” she said while unveiling the scheme this week.

About 100 youngsters who are judged to be particularly vulnerable to family breakdown are expected to take part in the two-year pilot programme involving 51 schools.

The move is designed to counter the poor educational standards associated with care homes by cutting the number of pupils that end up in them. To be fair the actual Daily Telegraph story made this clear. But as so often happens, a carelessly written headline has completely changed the meaning.
