This refers to a report by the think tank Politeia that claimed two in three trainee teachers who qualify are "not up to the job" and some primary teachers hold few academic qualifications.

It could be argued that primary schools need passionate and committed generalists rather than high-powered academics with first class degrees in economics.

However, figures from the Training and Development Agency for Schools show that the picture nowhere near as bleak as the Express believes.

Since 1998, the number of trainees has doubled. But so has the number who hold upper seconds or firsts, around half, in fact.
