The bash at St Andrews overflowed with BBC chaps. No less than Martyn Lewis, 6 O’Clock Good News Reader, was there to prattle on about the YouthNet information service.

Lewis was so impressed with the lecture hall attendance first thing in the morning - conscientious chaps and chapesses, these heidies - that he recalled a story about President Ronald Reagan out on the campaign trail for George Bush in small-town USA being surprised by the massive audience he faced. The man of many gaffes jumped in with both feet. “It’s sure such a pleasure to see such a dense crowd here today,” he quipped.

Baffling, really, why Lewis should choose to tell that little tale.
