What a brilliant description by Hilary Wilce (TES, May 24) of the vastly different worlds of the state and private schools. There is a third universe, the one of grant-maintained selective schools to which Harriet Harman and Tony Blair sent their offspring.

The “powerful decision-makers” will sometimes use the more convenient bits of the state system such as its nurseries or sixth forms, but until the young of these grandees have far more “hands-on experience” the chances of increasing social cohesion in this country are slim. Yet isn’t social cohesion a buzz term with new Labour?
