The fate of Castle Toward was much to the fore at East Renfrewshire’s education committee last week when opposition leader, and top Tory, Iain Drysdale recalled the residential education centre near Dunoon.

“I was there in 1951 when I went as a deprived wean from Mosspark and again in 1959 when I played with the Glasgow schools orchestra,” Drysdale said.

“Raiding the girls’ dormitories is another story, though.”

All of which prompted fellow councillor Allan Lafferty to remark that he’d be pleased to hear more later, while agreeing that Castle Toward deserved to be kept, not just for its worth in music, study and art courses, but for its evident place in education history.
