The Chartered Institute for Further Education (CIFE) has welcomed three new members, taking its membership into double figures.

Burton and South Derbyshire College is one of the new members. Dan Wright, CIFE chief executive, said the college had forged strong relationships across the sector, had demonstrated that it is responsive to challenge and was highly regarded by students and employers.

The college’s principal, Dawn Ward said being granted membership of CIFE was recognition of the “broad reach and scope within colleges such as ours and the impact we have on the local economy”.

Trafford College has also been granted membership. Wright said that it had “demonstrated the maintenance of high-quality standards and providing good teaching and learning over a sustained period of time”.

Lesley Davies, principal of Trafford College, said: “This accolade distinguishes us as a leading education provider and is a testament to our vision of becoming a career college.” She added: “At the heart of this vision is the dedication of our staff.”

‘Learner-centred’ further education

The third new member is WMC - The Camden College, an organisation described by Wright as being “highly responsive to the needs of its learners”. He added: “In particular we were impressed by the quality of the college’s strategic plan and its strong links with the community it serves.”

Membership of CIFE recognised the work being done to ensure the college was “learner-centred” and “dedicated to widening access to education for all adults across London,” according to its principal, Helen Hammond. She added: “I hope WMC-The Camden College can motivate other Colleges to join the CIFE membership to show their level of excellence in education.”

The CIFE, established in October 2015, now has 11 members. However, it remains far short of the 80 or 90 members that its chair, Lord Lingfield, has said it needs in order to generate enough income to become self-sufficient.
