SHOCK REVELATION of the NUT conference: death is not the end. It’s not just the threshold to the afterlife that deceased teachers can cross.

In his opening address to delegates Tony Brockman, the NUT’s new president, was wittily withering about the Government’s performance pay plans - particularly the recent training sessions for heads where assessors seemed unale to answer most questions.

“The best one I’ve heard is: can you cross the threshold post-

humously,” he told members. “Apparently, you can - provided you apply by June 5 and die after September 1. In the event of failure, presumably your estate can contest the decision in the employment tribunal.”

Ah, but will the NUT pay for the lawyers?
