The burden of office appeared to have finally snared John Cassidy at last weekend’s College Lecturers’ Association conference in the capital (page 32). Cassidy, a vocal left-winger from Cardonald College, has taken over as president-elect. A colleague remarked: “It’s the first time in 10 years I’ve seen him in a tie.”

But this was no sell-out. The good togs were for an Open University degree in the afternoon. See that lifelong learning . . .
