'Tight' timetable must be met, McConnell tells his critics

The Education Minister has told the General Teaching Council for Scotland that he intends pressing ahead with the review of initial teacher education which he wants completed by the summer, despite reservations from the GTC and the teacher education institutions (right).

Jack McConnell chose the GTC's own conference on "professionalism" in Dundee yesterday (Thursday) to make his announcement. He is ikely to antagonise council members by confirming that the contract for the review has been put out to tender, the plan being to hire management consultants.

Mr McConnell acknowledged the timetable for the review was "tight". But he added to the GTC's reservations about the impossibility of the task by including health education to the six "pressing issues" he wants the system to address.
