Q: My planning, preparation and assessment (PPA) time has been assigned on a Monday. But this year, we have a Bank Holiday, two weeks where we return on Tuesday and four Inset days on a Monday. I’m going to lose seven PPA sessions, while others seems to be getting their full entitlement. Should I insist I get my planning, preparation and assessment time on another day?

A: Is PPA 10 per cent of 1,265 hours of directed time, or 10 per cent of a week? In which case it is bad luck for those whose PPA time falls on a Monday. According to the teachers’ pay and conditions document, a teacher is allowed, as a part of the 1,265 hours directed time, reasonable periods of PPA time and “not less than 10 per cent of the teacher’s timetabled teaching time”. This would suggest that you could ask for planning, preparation and assessment time to be calculated as 10 per cent of the time in school, rather than of any five-day period. But your head may not thank you for sticking to the letter of the law.
