I read the Lion and the Unicorn by Shirley Hughes about evacuation before we came, although I found the pupils knew quite a bit already.
The children are so interested in all this - they’re really having a taste of something from the past. They brought lots of things in to school - letters, photographs, things their parents and grandparents had given them.
The parents had enjoyed dressing the children in costume and the children liked the fact that the adults had dressed up too. When we got off the train, some of them really thought they were somewhere else and they enjoyed learning to sing “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary”.
During the day the children were a little anxious about the bombs, but in a story it’s probably fine.
The children have had a glimpse of what their grandparents went through and this topic will certainly go on until the end of term.
