Teen drinking is generally worse in rural communities, a new study has found. The survey of over 100,000 English 10 to 15-year-olds found that between 15 and 20 per cent of respondents had used drink and drugs in the past week.

Twenty-three per cent of rural boys had used drink, compared with only 14 per cent of their urban counterparts.

“The devil makes work for idle hands,” said Dr David Regis, of the Exeter-based SHEU youth research group.
