Several ministers tried hard to suck up to teachers’ unions. But the best effort was by David Lammy, culture minister, who told a National Union of Teachers meeting: “I would not be here today and able to articulate what I am going to say if it were not for NUT teachers in Haringey and Peterborough, many of them socialists.”
