Toilet training

Lessons are literally going down the toilet as part of a new project linked to Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry.

Pupils from St Gabriel's RC high and specialist science college in Bury worked with the museum to produce an exhibition called Bugs in the Bathroom, which takes a light-hearted look at the history of Manchester's waste water systems. It also investigates the transport of water and diseases such as typhoid and cholera, which are associated with contaminated water supplies.

Pupils have produced online information to coincide with the museum's permanent exhibition which recreates a Manchester sewer, including the sights and smells.

Helen Mather, a teacher at St Gabriel's, said: "The students got a lot out of seeing how different specialisms within the museum came together to make something happen."
