Why no Lord Woodhead? Nearly three years after the former chief inspector of schools noisily resigned, he must be wondering when his reward for all his Labour bashing will come from the Conservative opposition.

Word among senior Tories, however, is that, when the question of ennoblement was being pressed by Woodhead fans under former leader William Hague, it was rejected. The prospect of Lord W shooting his mouth off in the upper chamber promised to make political life impossible for any Conservative education spokesman in the Commons.

While Woodhead will surely eventually get his lordship, he may have to wait until he is sufficiently toothless and dribbling to pose no threat to the careers of the Tory front bench.
