A new chartered history teacher category is likely to be introduced recognising outstanding contribution to teaching within a school and across the history community.

The Historical Association is in talks about introducing the status after it obtained a Royal Charter from the Privy Council last month.

Detailed rules have yet to be finalised, but teachers are likely to be able to apply for the status once they have had five years in the profession.

They would also need to be Historical Association members. The badge would not come with any additional salary, but could be used, for example, as evidence for threshold applications.

Heather Scott, chairwoman of the association’s secondary committee, said:

“This would be something for top-notch history teachers. We hope every teacher wants to aim for it.”
