Tories fight grants axe

BRIAN Monteith, the Tory education spokesman, is continuing his campaign for Scotland’s seven direct grant special schools to keep their Government subsidy.

Ministers want to channel the money through local authorities which can then choose to buy places. This follows a recommendation from the Riddell committee, which suggested the schoolsdrew most pupils from surrounding areas and were not therefore providing a national service.

But Mr Monteith told officials at last week’s committee hearing that many parents moved house so that their children could be near the schools, which include the Royal Blind School in Edinburgh and the Craighalbert Centre in Cumbernauld.
